The CASTROL Victoria Day Speedfest at the world renowned Canadian Tire Motorsport Park is host to the start of the Canadian Touring Car Championship presented by Continental Tire.
Team Hyundai Genesis Racing Canada sees this event as a great way to come out of the gate strong as the track lends itself to the Hyundai Genesis strengths as evidenced by the marque holding the top three qualifying positions in Race 2 on Sunday. The pole was snagged by Philippe Gelinas from Grand-Mere QC in his privately run Genesis flanked by the factory Genesis Coupes of Bob Attrell and Damon Sharpe. Sharpe quickly took the lead at the start from 3rd place only to falter back to 4th suffering an ailing gearbox. Sharpe said jokingly, sickness “I just couldn’t engage 4thgear and it’s kind of critical here”. Attrell went on to win the race and Sharpe hung on to finish 2nd. “A 1-2 sweep”, an emphatic Attrell said after the race. “My Team pulled all nighters to get us here and it’s great to reward them with this result”.
Race 1 saw the Hyundai Genesis Team on the podium with a 2ndand 3rd place with the win going to Gary Kwok of Markham ON. Sharpe who finished 3rd had a great start advancing from 8th to 3rdas the top three broke away from the rest of the field on lap 1. The 84 car of Sharpe locked up the brakes going into turn 8 on lap 6 resulting in flat spotted tires relegating the Tottenham ON driver back in the field. A steady and consistent 88 car of Attrell had a great battle with the BMW’s of Hocheschurz and Delle Donne and at the checkered flag Bob Attrell from Brampton ON scored a valuable 2nd place.
Blanchet Motorsports/Hyundai Genesis Racing now owns the points lead heading into Calabogie Motorsports Park June 4th-5th as the team hopes to capitalize on another track that lends itself to the Genesis Coupe’s strengths. “This is our chance to build a gap in points before we get to the tight twisty tracks later in the schedule”, said Team Owner/Partner Frank Blanchet. “The consistency and reliability is there this year so we are very focused on winning a Championship for HYUNDAI.
